Why is sleep important?
Sleep plays a vital role in good
health and well-being throughout your life. During sleep, your body is working
to support healthy brain function and maintain your physical health. In
children and teens, sleep also helps support growth and development. Firstly,
sleep is important to maintain a healthy brain function and emotional
well-being. Our brain will form new
pathways to help us learn and remember information & will aid in learning
process. Moreover, sleep is crucial for physical health. It also plays a role
in supporting healthy growth & development. In addition to that, sleep helps in maintaining a healthy balance
of the hormones that make you feel hungry (ghrelin) or full (leptin) and also
plays a role in a good immune system of our body. Last but not least, sleep
also plays a role in puberty and fertility. However, lack of sleep may result
in microsleep and may increase risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high
blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. As
a result, sleep deficiency may not only cause us to have trouble making
decisions but also in solving problems, controlling your emotions and behavior,
and coping with change. Sleep deficiency is not only harmful on a personal
level, but it also can cause large-scale damage that may affect many lives.
